SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS: Portland Bible is part of the National Christian Collegiate Athletics Assocation (NCCAA) and the Pacific Coast Athletics Conference (PCAC) ... the Wildcats compete against NCAA, NAIA, and NCCAA institutions, including a trip to Fairbanks after their games agaisnt UAA ... following an 8-game losing the streak, PBC has earned three straight wins by a total of seven points over George Fox, Linfield and Puget Sound.

JAMBOREE RECAP: UAA went winless for the first in the 22nd annual Seawolf Jamboree, falling to traditional West Region rivals Humboldt State and BYU-Hawaii, Dec. 12 & 13 at the Alaska Airlines Center ... in the first game, the Seawolves erased a double-digit deficit and tied it on a late three-pointer by Jr. F Christian Leckband (12 pts, 7 rebs, 4-8 FG), but the Lumberjacks sanks six straight free throws to earn a 87-83 road win ... Jr. PG Brian McGill had 21 points (8-14 FG), 9 assists and 5 rebounds, Sr. G Travis Thompson had 20 points (6-12 FG, 5-9 3FG) and 2 steals, and Fr. C Kalidou Diouf contributed 12 points (5-7 FG, 2-2 FT), 8 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 blocks in the loss – UAA’s first regular-season home game against a CCAA opponent since Nov. 1998 ... on Saturday against the 16th-ranked and unbeaten Seasiders, the Seawolves sliced an early deficit down to 30-25 late in the first half before the Pac West Conference club pulled away for a 90-69 win ... Thompson had 16 points (6-12 FG, 4-10 3FG) and 4 assists, while fellow all-tourney selection Diouf added 13 points (6-12 FG), 5 rebounds and a pair of blocks ... Leckband was solid with 14 points (4-7 FG, 2-4 3FG, 4-5 FT) and 5 rebounds, and Jr. G Kevin Bowman came off the bench to score double figures for the second time with 10 points (3-7 3FG) and career-high 5 assists.

 

TEAM NOTES: The Seawolves rank 19th nationally and 2nd in the GNAC with 18.3 assists per game ... UAA also holds top-50 national ranks in assist/turnover ratio (40th, 1.3) and FT pct. (49th, .734) ... in  the GNAC stats, the Seawolves are 2nd in FT%, assists per game, 3FGs made per game (8.1) and offensive rebounding pct. (.389), plus 3rd in A/T ratio, rebound margin (+5.0), offensive rebounds per game (12.6) and rebounds allowed per game (30.4) ... UAA held its opponents to a tournament-low .196 3FG% in the GCI Great Alaska Shootout, while tying for the second-most steals (15) ... the Seawolves held Northwest Indian to 12 rebounds on Nov. 22, breaking the previous record of 15 allowed (vs. NW Nazarene, 1/22/04) ... with the NW Indian results, UAA has reached the 100-point mark at least once in each of the last five seasons ... UAA’s 0-4 start was just the second such in program history (0-6 in 2001-02) ... UAA is aiming for the program’s 10th straight winning season and the program’s 32nd in 38 years … the Seawolves have also earned a plus-.500 league record for 26 of 32 years of conference membership.

 

THE THOMPSON TICKER: Sr. G Travis Thompson averaged 18.0 points on 9-of-19 long range shooting last week, just eight days after suffering an ankle sprain at Saint Martin’s ... Thompson became the 7th player in UAA history to reach 1,300 points and now trails Jason Kaiser (1,363 pts, 1993-95) by just 34 points for 6th place ... in the BYU-Hawaii game, he also moved past former record-holder Mark Drake (243, 2001-05) for 3rd on all-time in 3FGs made with 244, and now trails only former teammate Kyle Fossman (257, 2010-14) ... the former Dimond High star is also among UAA’s career leaders in assists (9th, 271), FTs made (7th, 251), FT% (6th, .851), 3FG% (6th, .441) and steals (12th, 102) ... in the current GNAC stats, he ranks 10th in scoring (14.7 ppg), along with 2nd in 3FGs per game (3.1) and minutes per game (33.3), 7th in steals per game (1.8) and 3FG% (.444) and 15th in assists per agme (2.9) ... Thompson  earned GCI Great Alaska Shootout All-Tournament Team honors for the second straight season after leading the 8-team, all-Div. I competition in scoring with 19.7 ppg ... Thompson’s 28 points in the finale vs. Rice was the second-most in this year’s tourney and pushed him into No. 4 on the Shootout’s all-time scoring list with 157 points, trailing only Peter Bullock (213), Ed Kirk (169) and Jason Kaiser (160) ... his 13 three-pointers were also tied for 6th-most in tourney history and set a new mark for a Seawolf ... Thompson was a unanimous selection for the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Preseason Player of the Year in voting by the league’s head coaches last month ... a First Team All-GNAC pick last year and a Second Teamer in 2011-12, he was also  picked a Div. II Bulletin ‘Super 16’ Preseason All-American this fall.

 

McGILL THE THRILL: Jr. PG Brian McGill currently holds down GNAC top-15 ranks in seven different categories, including 2nd in assists (6.6 apg, 11th nationally), 4th in minutes per game (31.7) and 6th in scoring (16.5 ppg) and 3FG% (.455) ... … after just 40 games, McGill already ranks 13th on UAA’s career list with 243 assists and needs just 17 more to break into the top 10 ... the Clackamas, Ore., native tied for third in the GCI Great Alaska Shootout with 5.3 assists per game, along with a tie for fifth in rebounds at 6.3 rpg ... this season McGill is a Preseason All-GNAC selection and has already been named to the All-Tournament Team at the Ron Logsdon Classic in California ... he garnered All-GNAC Second Team honors in 2013-14.

 

MORE PLAYER NOTES: Redshirt Fr. C Kalidou Diouf ranks 14th nationally (2nd among freshmen) in FG% at .667, making 54 of his first 81 shots to start his career ... the 6-9, 270-pound German shot 7 of 7 at Western Oregon, 13 of 14 against Northwest Indian, 6 of 9 against defending West Region champion Chico State and 5 of 7 vs. Humboldt State ... Diouf holds GNAC ranks of 20th in scoring (12.2 ppg), 12th in rebounding (5.3 rpg), 3rd in FG% and 6th in blocks (1.0 bpg) ... Fr. F Sjur Berg is one of four freshmen playing a key role in the Seawolf frontcourt, shooting 71 percent (17 of 24) from the field and 9 of 10 at the free-throw line so far ... he is the team’s 2nd-leading rebounder at 4.8 rpg, pulling down at least six boards on five occasions thus far ... the Norwegian brings extensive international experience with his national age-group squads and played his senior year at Southern California powerhouse Santa Margarita HS ... Jr. F Christian Leckband provided a big lift off the bench last week with consecutive season-highs of 12 and 14 points in the Seawolf Jamboree... Leckband is 3rd in the GNAC with a .478 3FG% this year ... on UAA’s career 3FG% list, the Nome product has risen to 16th at .400 ... since missing the Sonoma State trip, Leckband had scored 8 points in six consecutive games.

 

THE OSBORNE FILE: Eleventh-year head coach Rusty Osborne (195-113) has led the Seawolves to nine straight winning seasons, five NCAA Tournaments and a trip to the 2008 NCAA D-II Semifinals in his tenure at the helm … with UAA’s victory over Saint Martin’s on Jan. 25, 2014, he also became the winningest coach in program history, surpassing former mentor Charlie Bruns … Osborne captured his first career GNAC and NABC West District coach-of-the-year awards in 2008 after becoming the second coach to lead UAA to three consecutive NCAA berths (2006-08), and in 2011-12 his Seawolves posted a 24-10 record to equal the 2nd-most victories in program history; Osborne’s 2007-08 club holds that record with a 29-6 mark … before taking over the head job in 2004-05, the Texas native previously served 13 seasons (1991-04) as a UAA assistant, including 11 years as the top assistant … the Seawolves have won over 60 percent of their games with Osborne on the staff, claiming four conference titles and eight trips to the NCAA Division II Tournament. Osborne is assisted by Cameron Turner (4th season) and graduate assistant Tim Mollerstrom (3rd season).
