KANSAS CITY, Mo. (Mar. 19) – Alaska Anchorage junior Travis Thompson has been honored as one of the top 11 men’s basketball players in the NCAA Div. II West Region, earning second-team honors as the National Association of Basketball Coaches announced its 2013-14 all-district teams Wednesday.
Thompson, a 6-1 guard, was an All-Great Northwest Athletic Conference First Team performer after ranking second in the league in scoring (21.3 ppg), free-throw percentage (.892), and three-pointers per game (3.6). Nationally, the local Dimond High School product ranks 25th in scoring, 6th in three-pointers per game, 19th in free-throw pct. and 36th in three-point pct. (.421).
After redshirting the 2012-13 campaign, Thompson scored double figures in 28 of 30 games for the Seawolves (17-13, 10-8 GNAC) this year, including six performances with at least 30 points. Along with senior teammate Kyle Fossman, Thompson broke the former UAA and GNAC records for three-pointers in a season (total and per game), while helping UAA lead the nation in assist-turnover ratio and fewest turnovers per game.
Heading into his senior season in 2014-15, Thompson ranks No. 10 on UAA’s career scoring list with 1,197 points, along with top-10 marks in three-pointers made (4th, 216), three-point pct. (6th, .441), free-throw pct. (4th, .870) and free throws made (8th, 235).
