TOWSON, Md. (Feb. 19) – Alaska Anchorage junior Teancum Stafford was recognized Wednesday as one of the elite performers in NCAA Division II men’s basketball in terms of both academic and on-court accomplishments, earning selection to the Capital One Academic All-America Second Team.
The 6-5 wing from Auburn, Wash., becomes just the third player in program history to earn Academic All-American status, joining his brother Rick, who was a second-team pick in 1997, and Liam Gibcus, who was a third-teamer last season.
A preseason All-Great Northwest Athletic Conference selection, Stafford holds a 4.0 overall grade-point average as a psychology major and is on pace to graduate this May. On the court, he is the leading rebounder (7.4 rpg) and one of four double-figure scorers (13.4 ppg) for the Seawolves (15-6, 8-7 GNAC), who rank among the NCAA Div. II leaders in scoring and three-point production. Stafford is shooting 45 percent from the field and 38 percent from three-point range, with his season-high of 29 points coming in a November win over then-No. 5 Minnesota State.
In his two seasons at UAA, the former Snow (Utah) College transfer has cracked the Seawolves’ career top 20 in scoring average (13.8 ppg) and double-doubles (6) as well.
The Capital One All-America Teams are selected by a vote of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
