SEAWOLVES EARN BORDER SPLIT: The Seawolves escaped with a 65-64 victory at Simon Fraser on Jan. 30 before falling 99-76 at defending GNAC and West Region champion Western Washington in a regionally televised game Feb. 1 in Bellingham … in the first game, Jr. G Travis Thompson scored a game-high 25 points, including the winning layup with 3.8 seconds remaining, to help the Seawolves remain unbeaten in 11 all-time meetings against the Clan … Thompson posted his fifth consecutive 25-plus effort while adding a career-high 9 rebounds in 39 minutes … So. PG Brian McGill had 14 points and 4 assists, Sr. G Kyle Fossman tallied 11 points and 4 assists, and Jr. G/F Teancum Stafford had 8 points, 10 rebounds and 3 assists to help UAA overcome an early 28-11 deficit … at WWU, Thompson scored 16 points, but the Seawolves could not overcome 63 percent shooting (16 of 27 3FGs) by the Vikings and trailed throughout … McGill had 15 points (3-6 FG, 8-9 FT) and 6 assists, Fossman scored 14 points, and Stafford added 12 points in the loss.
TEAM NOTES: With win No. 187 at Saint Martin's on Jan. 25, UAA head coach Rusty Osborne surpassed former mentor Charlie Bruns (1991-2004) as the program's all-time coaching victories leader … UAA leads NCAA Div. II with just 8.5 turnovers per game, along with top-20 national ranks in assist-turnover ratio (2nd, 2.06), FT% (2nd, .802), 3FGs per game (3rd, 12.5), assists (17th, 17.6 apg), scoring offense (16th, 87.4 ppg) and turnover margin (19th, +4.0) … in the GNAC stats, the Seawolves lead in scoring offense, FT%, 3FGs per game, assists and asst-TO ratio, and rank 2nd in 3FG% (.397) and turnover margin … UAA needs three more wins to earn the program's ninth straight winning season and the 31st in 37 years … the Seawolves have also finished with a plus-.500 league record 25 times in 31 years of conference membership.
PLAYER NOTES: Jr. G Travis Thompson ranks No. 2 in the GNAC and 13th nationally with 22.2 points per game, along with top-10 national marks in 3FGs per game (7th, 3.73) and FT% (8th, .900) … Thompson leads the GNAC in 3FGs per game, plus ranks of 2nd in FT% and minutes (35.0), 12th in steals (1.3 spg), 10th in assist-turnover ratio (1.9), 14th in 3FG% (.406) and 15th in assists (2.6 apg) … coming off a redshirt season, the local Dimond HS product has tallied double figures in 21 of 22 games, including four times reaching the 30-point plateau, and five consecutive 25-plus games from Jan. 16-30 … he is currently on pace to break UAA's single-season records for 3FGs made (overall and per game) and FTs made, while his scoring average ranks 4th in program history … a 2nd-Team All-GNAC pick in 2011-12 and a preseason all-league selection this year, Thompson has become the latest member of UAA's 1,000-point club, now tied for 17th with 1,045 … on UAA's other career lists, he is 4th in FT% (.873), 5th in 3FGs made (189), 8th in 3FG% (.436), 10th in FTs made (220) and 20th in assists (206); he needs just seven more FTs to move into the top 10 ... Thompson was named Most Outstanding Player of the AT&T Jamboree and made the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout in November, and he was the GNAC Red Lion Player of the Week for Jan. 20-26 … along with Thompson, the presence of Sr. G Kyle Fossman gives UAA two 1,000-point scorers in the same lineup for the first time since 1986-87 (Jesse Jackson/Hansi Gnad), with the preseason all-league pick currently ranking 16th on UAA's all-time list with 1,046 points … a First Team All-GNAC pick and team MVP as a junior, Fossman ranks 8th in the GNAC scoring race with 15.7 ppg, boosted by a career-high-tying 28 points in UAA's Shootout loss to Div. I Indiana State … he is also among the league leaders in 3FGs made per game (2nd, 3.4), A-T ratio (2nd, 3.0), minutes (4th, 34.8), FT% (8th, .833), 3FG% (9th, .429), and assists (10th, 3.4), steals (16th, 1.1) and rebounding (20th, 4.5) … in the NCAA national stats, the team's only 4th-year senior is 9th in 3FGs per game and 22nd in assist-TO ratio … Fossman has risen to 3rd place on UAA's career 3FGs list at 219, meaning he would need to average 3.43 per game to break the Mark Drake's career record (243, 2001-05) during the regular season … Fossman's other Seawolf career ranks include 5th in 3FG% (.447), 8th in FT% (.845), 9th in games started (74), 15th in assists (224), 16th in points (1,071) and 17th in games played (97) … Fossman needs just 14 more points to move into the top 15 on that list, while with UAA's next victory, he will tie Butch Lincoln (69 wins, 1992-97) for 10th … another preseason all-league pick and returning All-GNAC 2nd Team selection, Jr. G/F Teancum Stafford sits 19th in the GNAC scoring race with 13.5 ppg, boosted by a career-high 29 points in the 83-72 victory over No. 5 Minnesota State … Stafford is also 4th in rebounding (8.0 rpg) and 10th in 3FGs per game (2.2), and last week he was selected to the Capital One Academic All-District Team, thanks to his 4.0 overall GPA … since transferring from Snow (Utah) College last year, the Auburn, Wash., native has scored double figures in 39 of 46 appearances, including a recent string of nine games … the owner of five career double-doubles, Stafford is set to graduate this May with his degree in psychology … So. PG Brian McGill has made a enormous impact in his first year of eligibility since transferring from Western Oregon … after setting the GNAC and UAA single-game record with 20 assists on Dec. 16, McGill ranks No. 2 in the league with 6.2 apg, along with other GNAC ranks of 6th in scoring (17.1 ppg), 5th in asst-TO ratio (2.6), 6th in minutes (33.3 mpg) and 9th in FT% (.832) … the Clackamas, Ore., native was named the GNAC Red Lion Player of the Week following his 29-point, 10-assist performance in the league-opening victory over UAF, becoming just the fifth player in 14 years to tally at least 25 points and 10 assists in a GNAC game … nationally, McGill ranks 18th in assists and 43rd in A-T ratio.
