ANCHORAGE (Feb. 8 ) – The guard duo of Brian McGill and Kyle Fossman scored 16 points apiece for host Alaska Anchorage, but the Seawolves were outscored down the stretch in a 75-62 men’s basketball loss to Montana State Billings at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex on Saturday.
The Seawolves (13-11, 6-7 GNAC) shot their third-lowest percentage of the year at .362 (21 of 58), including 10-of-37 marksmanship from three-point range, seeing a 10-game home win streak come to an end against their old rivals. MSUB had not won in Anchorage since both teams were in the Pacific West Conference in the 1998-99 season.
The Yellowjackets (9-12, 5-8) got huge games from the post duo of Austin Hudson and Jonathan Mesghna, who each had double-doubles and combined for 37 points and 20 rebounds. Hudson shot 9 of 13 from the floor and helped the visitors outrebound the Seawolves 44-29 as they snapped a 5-game losing streak.
After falling behind 30-21 late in the first half, the Seawolves stormed back with 16 of the next 18 points and took a 37-32 lead into the locker room.
UAA swingman Teancum Stafford scored all seven of his points during an early second-half run that saw the Seawolves forge a 47-39 edge with 13:53 remaining.
Mesghna answered with two three-pointers during an 11-0 run for the Yellowjackets, and the teams would trade baskets until Fossman drained a trey to make it 55-55 at the 7:46 mark. The Seawolves would go cold from there, however, missing their next eight shots and committing two of their 11 turnovers over the next five minutes.
When Travis Thompson finally converted a short layup at the 1:53 mark, it stopped a 14-0 Billings run and cut the UAA deficit to 69-57. The Seawolves could get no closer as they suffered their third straight home loss.
UAA makes its final Lower 48 road trip of the regular season when it travels to Central Washington (Feb. 13) and Northwest Nazarene (Feb. 15) next week.
NOTES: Third-year assistant coach Cameron Turner served as acting head coach Thursday, filling in for Rusty Osborne, who was serving a one-game suspension … MSUB had been 0-6 in Anchorage since joining the Great Northwest Athletic Conference in 2007-08 … combined with MSUB’s 75-67 win in Billings on Jan. 9, the results marked the Yellowjackets’ first regular-season sweep of UAA since the teams were Pac West rivals in 1997-98 … Thompson, who came in No. 2 in the GNAC with 21.8 points per game, was held to single digits for just the second time this year, finishing with eight points … now with 1,105 points, Fossman moved into 14th place on UAA’s career list, passing Vern Robateau (1,095, 1985-90) … UAA has now lost three straight at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex for the first time Feb. 5-19, 2005.
