SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS: Holy Names opened its regular season with a 75-43 loss at Chico State on Nov. 9 … the Hawks, from Oakland, Calif., were picked to finish last in the Pacific West Conference preseason poll, coming off a 5-21 record in 2012-13 … Regis, from Denver, is opening the regular season in Anchorage after nearly sweeping a pair of exhibition from D-I foes — losing 70-69 at Colorado State and winning at Air Force … the Rangers are coming off a 9-16 season and were picked to 11th of 14 teams in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference preseason poll.

 

THE SERIES: UAA is playing for the first time against both Holy Names and Regis.

 

DISNEY RECAP: The Seawolves nearly made it a perfect showing at the CCA Tip-Off Classic in Anaheim, Calif., Nov. 8-10, knocking off Lindenwood (74-57) and 5th-ranked Minnesota State (83-72), before falling to West Region foe Cal State Dominguez Hills (88-81) in the finale … the Seawolves produced a different leading scorer each night, getting 18 points and 8 rebounds from Sr. G Kyle Fossman to lead the way in the opener … Jr. G Travis Thompson added 11 points, 6 assists and 4 rebounds as all five Seawolf starters scored in double figures against the Lions … against the Mavs, UAA got a career-high 29 points from Jr. G/F Teancum Stafford, along with 18 points, 7 rebounds and 4 steals from Thompson, to outlast the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference favorites … So. PG Brian McGill added 12 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists to help UAA earn its first win over a top-5 team since Feb. 2006 … in the finale, the Seawolves nearly knocked off the Toros despite playing without the services of Stafford, who chose not to play on Sunday because of religious convictions … Thompson nearly made up the slack with a career-high 32 points, while McGill poured in 24 points, but the Toros ended the game with a 9-0 run after UAA had taken a late 81-79 lead.

 

2012-13 SEASON RECAP: UAA earned its eighth straight winning season with an 18-9 overall record in 2012-13, just missing its third straight NCAA Tournament berth … the Seawolves finished third — behind two teams ranked top-5 nationally — in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference standings with an 11-7 mark … UAA equaled its best-ever finish in the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout in fourth place, defeating Div. I programs UC Riverside and Loyola Marymount, while posting season sweeps of longtime rivals Alaska Fairbanks and Montana State Billings … Jr. G Kyle Fossman was a First Team All-GNAC selection, So. G/G Teancum Stafford was Second Team All-GNAC, and Sr. C Liam Gibcus earned honorable mention status.

 

ALL-CONFERENCE TRIO: Sr. G Kyle Fossman, Jr. G/F Teancum Stafford and Jr. G Travis Thompson were among 16 players named Oct. 17 to the 2013-14 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Preseason All-Conference Team … Fossman and Stafford were both unanimous selections in balloting by the league’s 10 head coaches, while Thompson’s inclusion gave UAA a tie for the most honorees, along with three apiece from Seattle Pacific and Central Washington … Fossman was a First Team All-GNAC performer last season, leading the Seawolves with 14.8 points per game … the Haines native posted top-5 GNAC ranks in 3FGs/gm (2.6, 2nd), minutes/gm (36.2, 3rd), 3FG% (.445, 5th) and FT% (.854, 5th)  … Stafford was a Second Team All-GNAC pick in his first season as a Seawolf, tallying 14.2 ppg, 4.5 rpg and 2.2 apg, scoring double figures in 22 of his 26 appearances, including a streak of 12 straight games to end the season … Thompson earned Second Team All-GNAC honors as a sophomore in 2011-12 before redshirting last season … the local Dimond High School product led the GNAC with 47.6 percent three-point shooting and a 2.7-to-1 assist-turnover ratio two years ago, while helping that squad to a 23-7 record and a second-round NCAA berth.

 

TEAM NOTES: UAA’s 88-81 loss to Cal St. Dominguez Hills snapped a streak of 24 straight wins when scoring 80 points or more … that streak covered the entire 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons, plus Saturday’s 83-72 win over Minnesota State  … UAA has won 28 of its last 31 at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex, with the only losses coming to 2012 NCAA champ Western Washington (twice) and then-No. 13 Seattle Pacific … with seven of the league’s teams having played at least two games, the Seawolves lead the early GNAC stats in scoring (79.3 ppg) and rank No. 2 in FT% (.803) … the 2012-13 Seawolves registered their eighth straight winning season and the 30th in the program’s 36 years … UAA also finished with a plus-.500 league record for the 25th time in 31 years of conference membership … last year’s team secured the program’s eighth straight top-5 GNAC finish, including the 2007-08 title and runner-up showings in 2010-11 and 2011-12.

 

PLAYER NOTES: With seven GNAC teams having played multiple games, UAA features four of the league’s top 10 scorers, led by Jr. G Travis Thompson (20.3 ppg, 2nd) … coming off a redshirt season, the local Dimond HS product tallied double figures in all three games at Disney, bettering his career-high by eight with a 32-point effort in the finale against CSU Dominguez Hills … a 2nd-Team All-GNAC pick in 2011-12 and a preseason all-league selection this year, Thompson currently ranks among UAA’s career top 20 in 3FG% (3rd, .457), FT% (7th, .846) and 3FGs made (17th, 116), and last week he reached the top 50 in scoring, now with 618 points (46th) … Sr. G Kyle Fossman was an First Team All-GNAC pick and joined Thompson as a preseason All-GNAC designee … the Haines product started the season right with team highs of 18 points (6-11 FG, 4-7 3FG) and 8 rebounds in the win over Lindenwood, along with double-figures scoring in the other two contests ... UAA’s 2012-13 team MVP ranks 10th in the early GNAC scoring race with 13.7 ppg, connecting on at least two three-pointers in all three games … Fossman rose last week from No. 12 to No. 7 on UAA’s career 3FGs list (153), and needs just six more to pass Scott Larrabee (157, 1996-2000), Chris Hamey (158, 1995-2000) and Adam Fitt-Chappell (158, 2002-06) for No. 4 …  his other career ranks include 5th in 3FG% (.454), 8th in FT% (.841) and 28th in points (767) … after picking up two quick fouls and going scoreless in the first half of the season opener, Jr. G/F Teancum Stafford exploded for 39 points over the next 60 minutes, including a career-high 29 points in Saturday’s 83-72 victory over No. 5 Minnesota State … a preseason all-league pick and returning All-GNAC 2nd Team selection, Stafford is No. 3 in the GNAC in scoring with 19.5 ppg … since transferring from Snow (Utah) College last year, the Auburn, Wash., native has scored double figures in 24 of 28 appearances, including a current streak of 14 games … So. PG Brian McGill made an impressive debut after sitting out last year as a transfer from Western Oregon, picking up 46 points, 13 assists, 15 rebounds and four steals on the trip to Anaheim … the Clackamas, Ore., native also shot 13 of 15 from the FT line and committed only seven turnovers in 109 minutes of action, including a 40-minute effort in the win over No. 5 Minnesota State … McGill is 6th in the early GNAC scoring race and ranks 2nd with 4.3 assists per contest.

NATIONAL RANKINGS: UAA received 16 votes in the NABC’s NCAA Div. II Preseason Top 25 poll, placing the Seawolves 34th in the rankings … the Seawolves have five games scheduled against three opponents in the top 10 — #5 Minnesota State and two apiece against GNAC foes #2 Seattle Pacific and #10 Western Washington … 7th-ranked Cal Poly Pomona is the only other West Region team to crack the top 25.
