UAA hoops adds husband-wife duo

ANCHORAGE (Sept. 5) – Seawolf Basketball will be a family affair this fall as UAA men’s coach Rusty Osborne and women’s coach Ryan McCarthy introduced the husband-and-wife tandem of Jacob and Emily Craft to their respective rosters Thursday.

Both players signed National Letters of Intent this summer after attending Central Wyoming College in Riverton, Wyo., last year.

Emily Craft, who played under her maiden name Smith, will be have two years of eligibility after playings two seasons at CWC. She averaged 10.4 points and 7.0 rebounds as a sophomore in 2012-13, shooting 48.5 percent from the field. The 6-2 center was a Class 3A All-State performer as a senior at Mountain View (Wyo.) High School in 2010-11, helping her team to a 26-4 record.

“"Emily is an extremely gifted athlete,” said McCarthy, who led UAA to 17 wins in his first season last year. “She played in a very good JUCO league where she led her team in scoring in a controlled system.  I am very excited about her potential because her natural gifts give her a very high ceiling in our style of play."

Meanwhile, Jacob Craft comes to UAA with four years of eligibility. The 6-7, 180-pound forward redshirted the 2012-13 campaign at Central Wyoming, where he earned a scholarship despite never playing varsity during his prep career. After graduating from Jordan High School in Sandy, Utah, he spent a 2-year LDS Church mission in Norway.

We are excited about Jacob joining our program,” said Osborne, whose Seawolves are coming off an 18-9 campaign. “We understand that it has been a while since he has played competitive games, but he showed a tremendous amount of potential last year before injuring his shoulder and missing the season at his JC. He is very skilled and active, and he can play multiple positions. He is a late bloomer who has continued to mature and work on his game after high school, and while he has to get stronger, he has four years of eligibility. He brings a lot of maturity and leadership skills to our program.”

The Crafts become just the second husband-and-wife duo to play for the Seawolves’ basketball teams at the same time, joining Clay and Selina Anderson, who played in 1996-97.
