UAA's Gibcus earns Academic All-District honor

ANCHORAGE (Feb. 1) – Alaska Anchorage’s Liam Gibcus was named Friday to the Capital One Academic All-District 8 Men’s Basketball Team, recognizing  the senior as one of the top five student-athletes among the 32 schools of the NCAA Division II West Region.

The 6-10 center from Lysterfield, Australia, was honored for his 3.80 overall grade-point average as a civil engineering major, plus his outstanding play on the court for the Seawolves.

UAA’s lone fourth-year senior leads the Seawolves in rebounding (6.3 rpg) and field-goal percentage (.591), and is third in on the team in scoring at 11.1 ppg. On UAA’s career lists, he is No. 7 in FG% (.569) and tied for 12th in games played (103), while his 74 victories in a Seawolf uniform are sixth-most all-time.

Gibcus is on pace to earn his third career Great Northwest Athletic Conference All-Academic honor this winter, having produced the league’s highest GPA among American institutions the past two seasons.

The Capital One all-district teams are voted on by sports information directors throughout the NCAA’s eight geographical districts, with the Div. II West Region comprised of three leagues – the GNAC, the Pacific West Conference and the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

Gibcus and the other academic all-district honorees now advance to the Academic All-America Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team Academic All-America honorees will be selected later this month.
