INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Feb. 29) – The Alaska Anchorage men’s basketball team remained at No. 2 in the third and last version of the Division II West Region rankings, released Wednesday by the NCAA.
With a 17-3 record against Division II competition, nationally 15th-ranked UAA trails only nationally 11th-ranked Western Washington (22-4) in the regional poll. In addition to WWU and UAA, the Great Northwest Athletic Conference holds four of the top six spots with Seattle Pacific (21-6) at No. 3 and Western Oregon (15-8) at No. 6.
Only three positions changed in this week’s rankings, with Pacific West Conference champion Dixie State (20-5) leapfrogging California Collegiate Athletic Association regular-season champion Chico State (18-6) for No. 4, while Grand Canyon (14-6) entered the poll for the first time at No. 10.
If the NCAA West Regional Championships were to start today, the Seawolves would play No. 7 Cal Poly Pomona (16-7) in the first round.
This marks the final version of the 2012 regional rankings, leading up to the final week of games. Dixie State has already clinched the Pac West’s automatic NCAA bid, while the GNAC and CCAA teams are entering their conference tournaments.
The playoff field will be announced on Sunday, Mar. 4, with the tournament set for Mar. 9-12 – most likely at the No. 1 regional seed.
After earning a quarterfinal bye, the Seawolves return to action Friday when they face either Seattle Pacific or Central Washington in the GNAC Tournament semifinals at 11 a.m. AST in Lacey, Wash.
