UAA men premiere at No. 2 in regional poll

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Feb. 15) – The Alaska Anchorage men’s basketball team has premiered at No. 2 in the season’s initial West Region rankings, released Wednesday by the NCAA.

With a 14-3 record against Division II competition, nationally 21st-ranked UAA trails only nationally 10th-ranked Western Washington (19-3) in the regional poll. In addition to WWU and UAA, the Great Northwest Athletic Conference is well represented with Seattle Pacific (19-5) at No. 3, Western Oregon (13-6) at No. 5 and Montana State Billings (12-7) at No. 9, just one spot out of playoff position.

Pacific West Conference leader Dixie State (17-4) is the top non-GNAC  team, while California Collegiate members Humboldt State (14-5), Cal Poly Pomona (14-5) and Chico State (15-5) round out the teams that would be in the NCAA West Regional Tournament if it started today.

Wednesday’s rankings do not reflect games played Monday and Tuesday, which include a win by Dixie State.

The regional rankings will be released the next two Wednesdays – Feb. 22 and Feb. 29 – before the NCAA selection committee determines which five teams will join the GNAC (tournament), CCAA (tournament) and PacWest (regular season) champions in the Mar. 9-12 regional tournaments. The playoff field will be announced on Sunday, Mar. 4.

The Seawolves are back in action Thursday when they host Saint Martin’s at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex, followed by a clash of possible playoff teams when Western Oregon visits for ‘Senior Night’ on Saturday. Both games tip at 7 p.m. AST.
