Rohde named Team MVP at UAA men's banquet
ANCHORAGE - Junior Taylor Rohde was tabbed Team MVP and all three
Seawolf seniors took home honors Saturday as the Alaska Anchorage men's
basketball team celebrated its 2010-11 season with its annual postseason
banquet at The Petroleum Club.
Rohde, a 6-9 center, was voted MVP after posting team-high stats of 16.1
points, 6.5 rebounds, 0.7 blocks and 61.4 percent shooting for a Seawolf
club that went 24-10 and reached the second round of the NCAA
Tournament. The First Team All-Great Northwest Athletic Conference pick
was an all-tournament selection at all three of UAA's regular-season
tourneys, and also gained Second Team All-West Region recognition at
season's end.
A transfer from Division I Arizona State, the Phoenix (Pinnacle HS)
native scored double figures in 30 of 34 games in his first year as a
Seawolf, posting a season-high of 31 points in a road victory over
Montana State Billings. Rohde had four double-doubles, including a
28-point, 15-rebound effort in UAA's Dec. 30 road win over eventual GNAC
champion Central Washington. His .614 field-goal percentage ranked No. 5
on UAA's single-season list, while his 140 free throws tied for No. 6.
Drew Robinson, a 6-1 point guard, received the Most Inspirational Player
award for the second straight season. After shaking off a midseason
ankle injury, the Lehi, Utah (Salt Lake CC) native wound up finishing
fourth in the GNAC with 4.1 assists per game, while shooting 80 percent
from the free-throw line. Robinson was the GNAC Player of the Week for
the first week of December and was an all-tournament selection at the
AT&T Jamboree. He finished his 2-year career No. 10 on UAA's
assists-per-game list (3.7 apg), plus No. 14 in FT% (.805).
Like Drew Robinson, fellow seniors Brandon Walker and Casey Robinson
also earned their respective awards for the second straight season.
Walker, a 6-3 wing, won the Bob Zundel Rebounders Trophy, bestowed on
the player who best displays the qualities of sportsmanship and
leadership toward teammates, coaches, referees, opponents, media and
fans. The Hayward, Calif. (Bishop O'Dowd HS/Loyola Marymount) native was
UAA's second-leading scorer (14.6 ppg) and finished his career as one of
just five Seawolves to post at least 1,200 points and 450 rebounds.
Meanwhile, Casey Robinson received the prestigious Jim Hajdukovich
Award, presented to the player who best displays physical toughness,
endurance and court awareness. The Manila, Utah (Eastern Wyoming CC)
native was UAA's fourth-leading scorer (9.8) and posted a GNAC-best
2.7-to-1 assist-turnover ratio. He also regularly led the team in
charges taken and was a prolific three-point shooter, setting the school
record with seven treys in a half against Western Oregon on Jan. 20.
Steve White, a 6-0 point guard, received the Best Defensive Player
award. The junior from Manly, Australia, led the Seawolves with 0.9
steals per game and was among the GNAC leaders in both assists and
assist-turnover ratio.
The Most Improved Player award went to Mario Gill, who averaged 10.3
points and 5.1 rebounds per game, but upped those numbers to 13.1 ppg
and 6.0 rpg over the final 21 contests. The Portland, Ore. (Wilson
HS/Eastern Arizona JC) product was an All-GNAC Honorable Mention
selection and an All-Tournament Team pick at the NCAA D-II West Regional
Championships. Gill also led the GNAC with his .463 three-point
percentage and shot 83 percent from the free-throw stripe.
Liam Gibcus, a 6-10 center from Lysterfield, Australia, earned the
Academic Achievement award for his 3.83 overall grade-point average as a
civil engineering major.
The MVP, Most Improved, Best Defensive and Most Inspirational awards
were determined by a team vote.
