UAA women 6th, men 9th in regional poll

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Mar. 2) – The Alaska Anchorage women’s basketball remained No. 6 while the Seawolf men dropped to No. 9 in the latest Division II regional rankings, released Wednesday by the NCAA.

The Great Northwest Athletic Conference holds three of the top nine places in the men’s rankings with No. 1 Central Washington, No. 5 Seattle Pacific and No. 9 UAA. SPU moved up three spots, while the Seawolves (22-8 overall, 16-7 vs. D-II) dropped two places despite a pair of victories last week over Alaska Fairbanks. The rankings, however, include only games played through Sunday, so UAA’s Monday win over Saint Martin’s and No. 8 Cal State-San Bernardino’s home loss Tuesday in its conference tournament are not reflected.

On the women’s side, the GNAC holds three of the top seven places, with Western Washington slipping from first to second, UAA (24-6, 22-5) at No. 6, and Seattle Pacific moving up one spot to No. 7. The Seawolves, who are ranked No. 16 in the national poll, have won three straight, including Monday’s GNAC tourney first-round win over Northwest Nazarene, which is not reflected in the rankings. Cal State-Monterey Bay leapfrogged WWU for the No. 1 position and the inside track to host the regionals should it win the CCAA Tournament title.

Following this week’s play, the NCAA selection committee will determine which five teams will join the GNAC (tournament), CCAA (tournament) and PacWest (regular season) champions in the Mar. 11-14 men’s and women’s regional tournaments. Those announcements will be made Sunday evening.

Both Seawolf teams are in action tonight in GNAC Tournament semifinal games against Seattle Pacific. The women tip off at 5:15 p.m., followed by the men at 7:30 p.m., in a doubleheader at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex. Tonight’s winners will advance to their respective GNAC tourney title games, with the men’s scheduled for 4 p.m. AST on Friday and the women’s set for Saturday night (time TBD).
