UAA women still 4th, men hold to playoff hopes at 9th

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Mar. 3) – Both Alaska Anchorage basketball teams again held steady in their respective West Region polls as the NCAA announced its final Division II regional rankings on Wednesday.

 

The Seawolf women (22-3 overall, 20-3 vs Div. II) stayed No. 4 for the fourth straight week despite running their winning streak to eight games on Saturday. The top four in the rankings remained the same with UC San Diego at No. 1, followed by Seattle Pacific, Western Washington and UAA. Fellow Great Northwest Athletic Conference squad and upcoming Seawolf opponent Northwest Nazarene fell one spot to No. 6.

 

Meanwhile, UAA’s men (16-9, 11-7) are still No. 9 after splitting games last week against Alaska Fairbanks (81-78 home win) and Montana State Billings (65-60 road loss).

 

The Seawolves are chasing No. 8 Central Washington and No. 7 Cal State San Bernardino for the final berth. UAA hosts Northwest Nazarene and region No. 1 Seattle Pacific to close the regular season, while CWU hosts Montana State Billings and Saint Martin’s. CSUSB is set to face region No. 4 Humboldt State in the semifinals of the California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament.

 

The Seawolf women are No. 13 in this week’s national poll, but only the regional rankings matter in terms of making the NCAA Tournament. The top eight teams in D-II’s eight regions qualify for their respective regional tournaments, which are generally hosted by the top seed. This is the final regional poll before the NCAA fields are announced.

 

While the majority of the NCAA Division II fields will be announced on Sunday, the West Region announcement has been postponed until late Monday night or Tuesday morning due to the Feb. 27 tsunami warnings in Hawaii. Those warnings forced the postponement of several Pacific West Conference games that impact the playoff races, and those contests cannot be made up until Monday night.
