UAA women still 4th, men 9th in region

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Feb. 24) – Both Alaska Anchorage basketball teams retained their respective West Region rankings Wednesday as the NCAA announced its weekly Division II regional polls.

 

The Seawolf women (20-3 overall, 18-3 vs Div. II) stayed No. 4 for the third straight week despite running their winning streak to six games on Saturday. UC San Diego remained No. 1, while Seattle Pacific took the No. 2 spot after defeating Western Washington on Saturday.

 

UAA’s men (15-8, 10-6) are still No. 9 after splitting road games at Western Oregon and Saint Martin’s last week. The Seawolves are squarely on the playoff bubble, behind No. 8 Cal State San Bernardino, with four games left in the regular season.

 

The Seawolf women are No. 13 in this week’s national poll, but only the regional rankings matter in terms of making the NCAA Tournament. The top eight teams in D-II’s eight regions qualify for their respective regional tournaments, which are generally hosted by the top seed. There will be one more regional poll before the NCAA fields are announced on Sunday, Mar. 7.

 

Both teams return to action tonight, with the women facing Montana State Billings (5 p.m. AST) on the road and the men hosting Alaska Fairbanks (7 p.m.).
