SPOKANE, Wash. (Nov. 30) – Alaska Anchorage’s Nicci Miller and Brandon Walker have earned the Great Northwest Athletic Conference’s Player-of-the-Week awards for women’s and men’s basketball, the league announced Monday.
Both Seawolves were honored for their outstanding performances in last week’s Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout.
In the women’s tournament, Miller totaled 39 points and 15 rebounds in wins over Division I programs Coastal Carolina and Cincinnati as the Seawolves earned their fourth consecutive Shootout title. The 5-10 senior forward shot 60 percent from the field, including 5-of-11 on three-pointers.
In the opening-round win over CCU, the Denver native tallied 24 points on 10-of-14 shooting, while she grabbed a game-high nine rebounds in the win over Big East Conference member Cincinnati.
On the men’s side, Walker was the tournament’s second-leading scorer, tallying 69 points in three games. The 6-3 junior swingman from Hayward, Calif., also grabbed a team-high 17 rebounds and averaged 2.3 assists per game to go with lofty shooting percentages of .667 (24-36) from the field, .625 (10-16) from three-point range, and .846 (11-13) at the free-throw line.
Walker came one point shy of his career-high with 27 in UAA’s loss to eventual champion Washington State, and he tallied 21 points (8-10 FG, 3-4 3FG), six rebounds and four assists in UAA’s 72-58 win over Nicholls State.
After six career Shootout games, Walker now stands 11th on the tournament’s all-time scoring list with 114 points.
Miller won the GNAC weekly award outright, while Walker shared the honor with Northwest Nazarene’s Brian Barkdoll. It is the first such career honor for both Seawolf players.
UAA’s women return to action with neutral-court games against Nyack (N.Y.), Dec. 3 and Dec. 5 in Fairbanks, while the men will have a 2-week break before heading to Fairbanks for the Glacier Classic, Dec. 11-12.
