Barker bags

BEAVERTON, Ore. (Apr. 2) – Alaska Anchorage senior Kenny Barker picked up another accolade this week when he was named an honorable mention All-American by Division II Bulletin.

The 6-3 guard had previously been cited as a preseason All-America pick by the same publication last fall.

As for his postseason honors, Barker was the lone unanimous selection in the All-Great Northwest Athletic Conference balloting, and was named to the NABC and Daktronics All-West Region teams.

The San Diego, Calif. (Claremont HS) native ranked among the GNAC’s top 10 in seven different statistical categories and was the only player to do so in scoring (18.7 ppg, 4th), rebounding (6.3 rpg, 9th) and assists (4.2 apg, 5th). In league games only, he ranked second in scoring (20.4 ppg) and dished 4.9 assists per game.

A former second-team all-league selection when he played for Alaska Fairbanks in 2006-07, the transfer finished in the GNAC’s career top 20 in 13 different categories, including No. 14 in scoring (1,501 pts) and rebounds (589), and No. 13 in assists (341).

In his lone season at UAA, Barker reached the 20-point mark in 15 games, including a GNAC-season-high 38 points in a home victory over UAF. That outing on Jan. 31 also tied him for No. 8 on UAA’s single-game scoring list and was the most ever for a Seawolf against the Nanooks.

In November, Barker made the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout All-Tournament Team, leading UAA to a victory over Division I program Louisiana Tech with 23 points, 11 rebounds and five assists.

Barker helped the Seawolves overcome a 0-5 start to their season to post a final mark of 15-14, giving UAA its fourth straight winning season.
